Skills shortages in Construction

In the aftermath of the 2009 recession, the industry was struggling with 14,000 job vacancies that remained unfilled. Fast forward to 2022, and this figure has surged to a daunting 45,000. The situation is further compounded by an aging workforce and a dearth of new entrants, suggesting no imminent improvement.

And that’s just taking in account the skills for today’s industry – as digitalisation grows and the implementation of ambitious initiatives like the decarbonisation of major estates such as the NHS and education, the call for fresh skills and a more sustainable construction approach becomes ever more pressing.

In our September seminar, we will hear from Nicola Hodkinson, the owner and director of Seddon Construction Ltd. Nicola takes immense pride in the fact that over 10% of her workforce is engaged in ‘earn and learn’ contracts. Her mission is to galvanize the broader industry, spanning from the supply chain to clients, to proactively explore avenues for enhancing and upskilling our workforce.
