SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Understanding PPN 06/21: Producing a compliant Carbon Reduction Plan
DESCRIPTION:PPN 06/21 sets out the requirement for suppliers bidding on major central government contracts to submit a Carbon Reduction Plan and commit to achieving Net Zero by 2050. But what does this mean in practical terms — especially for SMEs? \nHosted by Turner & Townsend\, this session brings together SME contractors and public sector clients to explore how PPN 06/21 is reshaping procurement and what support is available to help small businesses respond effectively. \nFrom developing credible carbon reduction plans to understanding how clients are embedding carbon requirements into tenders\, we’ll offer clear\, practical advice from both sides of the procurement table. This is a chance for SME suppliers to prepare for future bids — and for clients to engage suppliers in a meaningful\, constructive way that supports net zero goals. \nWhat you’ll gain: \nA breakdown of what PPN 06/21 requires and how it applies to organisations\nPractical support and tools available to help SMEs develop Carbon Reduction Plans\nInsights into how clients are reflecting carbon requirements in tender documents\nAn opportunity to strengthen collaboration between clients and suppliers through Constructing Excellence Manchester’s network \nWhether you’re a contractor looking to stay eligible for public work\, or a client aiming to embed net zero in procurement\, this session delivers essential insight and real value. \nOnce you have got a ticket we will send a link over to you for the webinar.

SUMMARY:Skills shortages in Construction
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the 2009 recession\, the industry was struggling with 14\,000 job vacancies that remained unfilled. Fast forward to 2022\, and this figure has surged to a daunting 45\,000. The situation is further compounded by an aging workforce and a dearth of new entrants\, suggesting no imminent improvement. \nAnd that’s just taking in account the skills for today’s industry – as digitalisation grows and the implementation of ambitious initiatives like the decarbonisation of major estates such as the NHS and education\, the call for fresh skills and a more sustainable construction approach becomes ever more pressing. \nIn our September seminar\, we will hear from Nicola Hodkinson\, the owner and director of Seddon Construction Ltd. Nicola takes immense pride in the fact that over 10% of her workforce is engaged in ‘earn and learn’ contracts. Her mission is to galvanize the broader industry\, spanning from the supply chain to clients\, to proactively explore avenues for enhancing and upskilling our workforce.

SUMMARY:Diversity and Inclusion in the construction industry …. attracting and retaining talent.
DESCRIPTION:Those in the construction sector often suggest that Diversity and Inclusion is perceived as Health and Safety was a couple of decades ago\, recognised as being a valuable attribute but not universally accepted as core to the value of businesses and the sector.  The tide is changing and more and more leaders expect their employees\, partners and suppliers to not only get the business case for inclusion but drive inclusion. \nThe time to embrace this is now\, with many of our public sector clients looking to us to demonstrate how they are meeting their equality objectives\, the unattractive reading of gender pay gap reports\, the rumours of a race pay gap reporting requirement and the imperative to find the talented workforce of the future. Our speaker\, from built asset design & consultancy firm Arcadis\, will explore the value of good employment practices in attracting and retaining talent and the role each of us play in creating an inclusive place to work. \nWe are also joined by Jane Kenyon\, the founder of Girls Out Loud CIC\, who will talk about how the organisation works with school-age girls to raise their self esteem\, ambition and awareness of opportunities for career development.\nWhen:  Wednesday 12th June 2019\nBreakfast  8.00  – 10.00am\nWhere: Trowers & Hamlins LLP\, 55 Princess Street\, Manchester M2 4EW \nFee £15  Book now on Eventbrite here    Free to members of CE Manchester.  \n(Companies – please book your attendees individually.) \nOur series continues.  Forthcoming seminar dates:\nJuly 17th and September 11th

SUMMARY:Delivering a green Manchester City Region - a key role for construction
DESCRIPTION:At the recent\, second\, Green Summit\, the 5-Year Environment Plan for Greater Manchester was presented with the explicit aim of making our City Region ‘a place which is fit for the future’ and requiring us urgently to face the environmental threats\, taking a lead in tackling climate change and environmental degradation. \nThe Plan sets out the aim to become a Carbon Neutral City Region by 2038 and this has implications\, both challenges and opportunities\, for our industry in terms of the design\, delivery and management of new buildings and the treatment of the existing stock. \nThis seminar\, presented by our chair Roger Burton\, an architect and member of the RIBA Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission\, will consider what the Plan means for our industry\, what action we can take now and over the next five years to put our built environment on the path towards achieving Manchester’s ambitions. \nBook your ticket(s) here
