SUMMARY:Skills shortages in Construction
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the 2009 recession\, the industry was struggling with 14\,000 job vacancies that remained unfilled. Fast forward to 2022\, and this figure has surged to a daunting 45\,000. The situation is further compounded by an aging workforce and a dearth of new entrants\, suggesting no imminent improvement. \nAnd that’s just taking in account the skills for today’s industry – as digitalisation grows and the implementation of ambitious initiatives like the decarbonisation of major estates such as the NHS and education\, the call for fresh skills and a more sustainable construction approach becomes ever more pressing. \nIn our September seminar\, we will hear from Nicola Hodkinson\, the owner and director of Seddon Construction Ltd. Nicola takes immense pride in the fact that over 10% of her workforce is engaged in ‘earn and learn’ contracts. Her mission is to galvanize the broader industry\, spanning from the supply chain to clients\, to proactively explore avenues for enhancing and upskilling our workforce.

SUMMARY:Diversity and Inclusion in the construction industry …. attracting and retaining talent.
DESCRIPTION:Those in the construction sector often suggest that Diversity and Inclusion is perceived as Health and Safety was a couple of decades ago\, recognised as being a valuable attribute but not universally accepted as core to the value of businesses and the sector.  The tide is changing and more and more leaders expect their employees\, partners and suppliers to not only get the business case for inclusion but drive inclusion. \nThe time to embrace this is now\, with many of our public sector clients looking to us to demonstrate how they are meeting their equality objectives\, the unattractive reading of gender pay gap reports\, the rumours of a race pay gap reporting requirement and the imperative to find the talented workforce of the future. Our speaker\, from built asset design & consultancy firm Arcadis\, will explore the value of good employment practices in attracting and retaining talent and the role each of us play in creating an inclusive place to work. \nWe are also joined by Jane Kenyon\, the founder of Girls Out Loud CIC\, who will talk about how the organisation works with school-age girls to raise their self esteem\, ambition and awareness of opportunities for career development.\nWhen:  Wednesday 12th June 2019\nBreakfast  8.00  – 10.00am\nWhere: Trowers & Hamlins LLP\, 55 Princess Street\, Manchester M2 4EW \nFee £15  Book now on Eventbrite here    Free to members of CE Manchester.  \n(Companies – please book your attendees individually.) \nOur series continues.  Forthcoming seminar dates:\nJuly 17th and September 11th

SUMMARY:Delivering a green Manchester City Region - a key role for construction
DESCRIPTION:At the recent\, second\, Green Summit\, the 5-Year Environment Plan for Greater Manchester was presented with the explicit aim of making our City Region ‘a place which is fit for the future’ and requiring us urgently to face the environmental threats\, taking a lead in tackling climate change and environmental degradation. \nThe Plan sets out the aim to become a Carbon Neutral City Region by 2038 and this has implications\, both challenges and opportunities\, for our industry in terms of the design\, delivery and management of new buildings and the treatment of the existing stock. \nThis seminar\, presented by our chair Roger Burton\, an architect and member of the RIBA Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission\, will consider what the Plan means for our industry\, what action we can take now and over the next five years to put our built environment on the path towards achieving Manchester’s ambitions. \nBook your ticket(s) here

SUMMARY:The Essential Role of Green Infrastructure in Building Resilience in the Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:Over the next 25 years it is expected that around 650\,000 houses will be built in the North of England with £75bn investment planned. This presents challenges as well as opportunities – increased carbon emissions\, flood risk and pollution as well as loss of habitats and green spaces where people can unwind. \nPutting green infrastructure at the heart of development presents a natural solution to some of these challenges: creating places that are healthier\, happier\, more environmentally friendly and more attractive for the people who live\, work and invest in them. \nSian Day\, who works with companies to build the City of Trees movement\, helping to plant more trees\, manage more woodland and connect more  people to nature\, will talk about the City of Trees initiative and how this will deliver the benefits of green infrastructure for Greater Manchester.’\nWhen:  Wednesday 13th February 2019\nBreakfast  8.00  – 10.00am\nWhere: Trowers & Hamlins LLP\, 55 Princess Street\, Manchester M2 4EW \nFee £15\nFree to members of CE Manchester. \nBook on Eventbrite here \n(Companies – please book your attendees individually.) \nThe CE Manchester team look forward to seeing you at our Spring 2019 series. \nFurther dates for your diary:  March 13th\, April 17th

SUMMARY:Green specification - Minimising Environmental Impact in the Construction Sector
DESCRIPTION:With the Government’s increasing focus on sustainable development\, many clients are recognizing the need to prove that their buildings are built with sustainability in mind.  The sourcing\, manufacturing\, use and ultimate disposal of materials and components must take account of their environmental impacts\, including those affecting climate\, biodiversity and air quality\, and embracing ethical considerations of extraction impacts\, labour and health. \nThis seminar\, with Tony Woodford of BRE\, will consider the whole life issues and choices which need to be informed by these considerations and look at the latest guidance to help us to understand the process of responsible sourcing and specification of products used in the construction industry\, considering a framework for the organisational governance\, supply chain management and environmental and social aspects that must be addressed in order to ensure their effective delivery. \nWhen:  Wednesday 14th November\nTime:    8 – 10am\nWhere:  Trowers and Hamlins LLP\, 55 Princess Street\, Manchester M2 4EW \nBook Here \nThe CE Manchester team apologies that our seminar on Minimising Building Defects planned for 17th October has had to be cancelled but will be rescheduled in our 2019 programme.

SUMMARY:Towards a resilient construction industry - are you adapting to change?
DESCRIPTION:The collapse of Carillion has kick started a wide-ranging debate about the causes of the company’s demise\, the role of government and the efficacy of public sector contracting. It puts a spotlight on the ability of the UK’s construction industry to withstand uncertainty and changes in the business environment.  Tellingly\, while contributing 7% to the UK economy\, the industry suffers over 16% of insolvencies. \nA new report asks ‘Are we built on a house of cards?’ Resilience is the ability of organisation’s to respond to change and disruption.  We live in uncertain times with weak economic growth and demand as well low productivity and skill shortages. The report’s co-author\, Tim Whitehill of Project Five Consulting\, will highlight key issues which need to be addressed in organisations to embrace resilience. \nAdam White of Manchester Airport Group is responsible for a planned £1 billion of development at Airport City and will give an update on progress and the impact on the local construction economy. He will also give a client’s perspective on the need for resilience in procurement and delivery of such a large programme of work. \nJoin Constructing Excellence Manchester on 11th July as we take a more in-depth look at the issues around building a more resilient construction industry \nTo book your tickets please visit https://bit.ly/2t3BT8O \nFREE to members of Constructing Excellence
