SUMMARY:New Models of Construction Procurement – latest developments in integrated and collaborative approaches
DESCRIPTION:We team up with the CIOB for this presentation by Don Ward\, Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence and Colin Harding\, past President of the CIOB. \nBoth our speakers are no newcomers to working to develop integrated and collaborative ways of working. The Government Construction Strategy identifies three new models of construction procurement: two-stage open book\, cost-led procurement and integrated project insurance. These all aim to facilitate collaboration. The Cabinet Office’s Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) now recommends two of these approaches for the public sector. \nThis event will provide an overview of these models and provide detailed insight into two related developments: the new FAC-1 framework agreement and the IDC Single Responsibility approach as supported by CIOB. FAC-1 is attracting wide-ranging interest and this session will illustrate the new processes and links by which it supports collaboration and improved value. \nWhen:  Wednesday 15th November\nBreakfast  8.00  – 10.00am\nWhere: Trowers & Hamlins LLP\, 55 Princess Street\, Manchester M2 4EW \nPlease put this date in your diary.\nBooking on Eventbrite will commence next week \nFee £10.  Free to members of Constructing Excellence Manchester and CIOB \nThe CE Manchester team look forward to seeing you at our Spring 2018 series.  Planned dates: January 17th\, February 14th\, March 14th.  And don’t forget the members-only evening on 29th November

SUMMARY:FutuREstorative - Towards a New Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Martin Brown will be sharing his and contributor insights from the recently published RIBA Book FutuREstorative which has brought together thought leaders in the UK and beyond within Martin’s overarching narrative. \nCentral to FutuREstorative is the emergence of a net positive and restorative sustainability\, exploring the shift from an often blinkered focus on sustainability as simply energy performance to a more rounded social\, wellness\, health and healthy buildings debate. \nThe presentation will highlight the importance of collaboration and digital sharing\, through social media and building information management\, as the new ‘tools’ in the sustainability toolbox. This will be complemented by a presentation by Ged Couser of BDP which focusses on the RIBA Award winning Alder Hey Children’s Hospital\, a scheme which demonstrates architectural excellence while contributing positively to its economic\, social\, environmental and cultural context becoming probably the most sustainable major acute hospital in the UK. \nPlease diary this date. \nBooking will commence early January. \nFee £10 / Free to members of CE Manchester\, CIBSE and the Landscape Institute. \n2017 marks the twentieth year of the Egan report ‘Rethinking Construction’ and we will be revisiting those enduring themes through this and future events. \nFurther dates for your diary: 15th February and 23rd March

DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Robin Nicholson\, senior partner at Cullinan Studio and Simon Foxell\, principal of the Architects Practice and author of ‘Starting a Practice: A Plan of Work’\nIn May 2015 the multi-disciplinary Edge ginger group launched ‘Collaboration for Change’\, the report from the Edge Commission on the Future of Professionalism\, chaired by Paul Morrell\, the first Chief Construction Adviser to Government. \nThe Commission concluded that the pressures for change that the professions face are real and profound but with an equally powerful conviction that there is an opportunity to find a new position for themselves that captures the best of the values of their past\, while being relevant to the 21st century challenges we face. \nCore Edge members Simon Foxell and Robin Nicholson will report on progress to date and discuss how the North-West might rise to Morrell’s challenges. \nFee: £10 / free to members of Constructing Excellence \nClick here to book on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:New construction health & safety regulations: are you ready?
DESCRIPTION:On 6 April 2015\, the long awaited Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 came into force\, bringing into effect changes in the crucial area of health and safety in construction projects. Ensuring that you are ready for these new regulations is therefore fundamental. \nThis informative discussion will examine the increased scope of the new regulations and whether the new roles are simply a re-labelling of the old or whether the new regime will see a fundamental shift in methodology necessitating a change to your underlying approach to managing projects going forward. Our health and safety specialist will also look at the enforcement ramifications of failing to comply with these new duties\, and the potential issues posed by the regulations in terms of future criminal proceedings against the various dutyholders. \n  \nYour Speakers: Rachel Chaplin\, Professional Support Lawyer – Construction and Rod Hunt\, Partner – Health & Safety from Clyde & Co \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Big Cities & Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Your speaker:  David Rudlin\, URBED \nFor the first time in years housing has been an election issue – we need to be building around 250\,000 new homes every year and are falling short by around 100\,000. For some towns this is a huge problem as they struggle to find additional land for housing in the face of local opposition. Others\, especially the large cities\, see it an opportunity to grow their economy and population. \nSince with winning the Wolfson Economics prize last year David Rudlin of URBED has been working with Sheffield council to explore the implications of housing growth to create an more successful\, sustainable conurbation. He will describe this work and the implications for other cities. \nSign up for your free place:  http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/big-cities-sustainability-tickets-17051973913 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Improving efficiencies in winning work – PQQs & ITTs
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Leonie Thomas\, associate\, Marketing Works \nThe event will help contractors and consultants consider whether there are opportunities to improve their own companies’ behaviours\, approaches and activities in developing efficiencies around their winning-work process and in particular PQQ and ITT responses. \nFollowing a presentation of findings from MarketingWorks’ 2014 bid cost survey\, the audience will be given an opportunity to develop an understanding of their organisations’ bid costs\, current conversion rates and the impact this has on a business’s profitability. The role of selectivity tools when deciding which opportunities to pursue will then be discussed. \nThe session will be rounded off with the audience undertaking a self-review of their own perceived work-winning strengths and weaknesses in PQQ and proposal writing.
